Volunteer Spotlight
By Nancy Weeks
As published in ECIA Vistas Newsletter - December 2025
Joan Osborn joined Eldorado Neighbors Helping Neighbors (ENHN) in July 2024 to help people and to meet people. She is succeeding in both with ENHN, a volunteer-based organization dedicated to helping area residents age in place. The group offers support and services so residents can remain safe and independent in their homes.
Joan’s initial volunteer task with ENHN was gathering mail from a senior resident’s mailbox and delivering it to his door for a few weeks after surgery. She was also part of a team that took turns walking a dog for a local resident temporarily using a wheelchair. She has since taken on many other tasks to help Eldorado residents.
Joan said her late father-in-law was a “source of inspiration” for her and others by volunteering for many organizations and helping countless people. Working in the service professions and volunteering have been constants throughout her life. While living in Illinois, Joan taught literacy for adults through the Chicago Public Library.
When Joan was nearing her forties, she took a new path by earning a master’s degree in speech and language pathology. She then moved to Japan, where she provided speech and language services to children of American service members on military installations. During those years, she traveled extensively in Guam and other Asian countries.
American children were not her only students. She was also a facilitator with Japanese adults learning English as a second language.
Since moving to Eldorado, Joan has also been active in the Ken and Patty Adam Senior Center, delivering meals and sending cards to the homebound. Additionally, she contributes time to the Vista Grande Public Library and to the Many Mothers organization in Santa Fe.
ENHN Coordinator Anne Nichols commented, “Joan’s enthusiasm for stepping up inspires others as she sets the gold standard for volunteering.”
ENHN is always looking for new volunteers of all ages and skill sets, from physical tasks to emotional support. Anyone interested in volunteering can contact Anne at enhnnm@gmail.com (this link directs you to your email application) or 207 797-5555.
